Cracking India: Fictions and Histories

India is the world's largest democracy, an ancient civilization and a relatively young nation. Recently, Indian authors have been appearing with dizzying frequency at the top of international prize lists, bookstore windows, and in the American classroom. How do contemporary novels engage with India's complex history and the challenges faced by the nation today? We will read works by Amitav Ghosh, Salman Rushdie, and Bapsi Sidhwa while focusing on questions of nationalism, history, memory, violence, trauma, language politics, and identity.
