Out of Africa: Tales from Morocco and South Africa | ||
| This course scrutinizes two quite different countries on the vast and complex continent of Africa: the North African kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of South Africa. In our first meeting we will trace European, Middle Eastern, and African influences in Morocco since the Middle Ages; we will conclude by examining the rise of Islamism. The South African day will show the troubled evolution of a common society before, during, and after the era of apartheid; how do people in the vibrant present deal with bitter memories? These historical case studies will help clarify why the global north-south divide expresses itself in sometimes surprising ways at the beginning of the 21st century. | |||
