2009 marks the centennial of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in the West. It was one of the most creative periods in all of ballet, and Diaghilev was one of the greatest impresarios in history. He combined the talents of dancers and choreographers including Vaslav Nijinsky, George Balanchine, Anna Pavlova and Tamara Karsavina; composers including Stravinsky, Debussy and Prokofiev; and visual artists including Picasso, Matisse and Rouault. Their first appearances in Paris caused both rapture and revolution: Hence the famous brawl at the premiere of "The Rite of Spring."
