Unraveling French Cinema | ||
| This seminar is an introduction to the complexities of French cinema and to the ways in which French filmmakers have focused as much on the question, "What is cinema?" as they have on the story-line of their films. To make the French cinema eminently comprehensible, to a broad audience of teachers of all disciplines, we will study the many ways in which French directors "complicate" their films in terms that Hollywood audiences are unprepared to appreciate. The class will focus on the analysis of several cinematic arenas, (poetry, dream, hypnosis and terror) in order to read a film for plot and also uncover a "thesis" on the meaning of cinema hidden in the film's texture. We will screen and discuss excerpts from five major films. (In French) | |||
