SEMINAR PROFILE

A04 -
Art, Power, and Politics in the Ancient World

This seminar explores how the ruling powers of ancient civilizations employed visual art to serve their political interests. Beginning with Egypt and the Near East and proceeding to Greece and Rome, we will examine works of art made millennia ago with political imagery that is familiar from more recent history. We will make use of the world-famous collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the special exhibition "Art & Empire: Treasures from Assyria in the British Museum." Readings will include theoretical writing on 'propaganda' and case studies of specific monuments.
