Mathematics and Public Policy: Fair Elections, Fair Division, Rankings, Networks and More | ||
| Many of the ways we make decisions in our society have mathematical connections. What is the most fair approach to conducting an election? How do we equitably divide resources or costs among several stakeholders? Are the now omnipresent rankings of everything from colleges to golfers to restaurants to movies really useful? If not, how could we make them better? How can we describe our many in-person and virtual networks mathematically? In this course we use many simple (and a few sophisticated) mathematical approaches to study how a quantitative view can aid our understanding of these and other social issues. We will cover a variety of examples that can be imported into the curriculum almost anywhere along the K-12 spectrum. | |||
