The Lost Gospels

The 20th century saw the rediscovery of number of so-called "lost" gospels, that is, early Christian gospels that were suppressed by the emerging orthodoxy of the fourth century and thereafter. In this course we look closely at two such lost gospels, The Gospel of Thomas and The Gospel of Mary. These two texts will help us to think about the diversity of Christianity in its first few centuries, about what constitutes a "gospel," and how these two gospels' unique interpretations of Jesus and his teaching and ministry.
