SEMINAR PROFILE

H20 -
Sophocles' Non-trilogy: Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone

Although Sophocles' three "Oedipus" plays form a continuous narrative, they were written at very different times in the playwright's life, and contain striking contrasts, and even contradictions. This two-day seminar will look at each play on its own and then at the three in conjunction, first in the order of the narrative, as above, and then in the order of composition, considering as well the historical circumstances of each play: Antigone (composed c. 441, Sophocles aged c. 55, on the verge of the Athenian Empire), Oedipus the King (composed c. 420, Sophocles aged c. 76, the first stages of the Peloponnesian war) and Oedipus at Colonus (composed c. 406, Sophocles aged c. 90, on the edge of Athens' defeat in the war).
