Dysfunctional Societies: Exploring Dystopian Fiction for Middle and High School Readers

The publication of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has resulted in an explosion of dystopian novels for middle and high school readers. What is the draw of this genre for young people? What questions do these novels raise about our society? How can teachers help students deepen their understanding of the issues raised in this popular form of fiction? In this seminar, we will look at a variety of dystopian short stories and novels such as Feed by M.T. Anderson and then explore the best of what is currently being published. Our book discussions will focus first on our own responses to the novels and then on ways to facilitate students' understanding of these often disturbing works.
