World War I Centenary: Exploring Literature and Film About the War that Transformed the Century | ||
| The carnage unleashed by the First World War is staggering. Between nine and fifteen million were killed, often in battles of appalling horror. The war itself and the treaties that ended it redefined geographical boundaries around the world, precipitated the Russian Revolution, and created conditions that led to the next war twenty years later. In addition, the war itself and its aftermath utterly transformed European and American culture, art, literature, and music. The literature that came out of this war-especially the poetry written by soldiers-as well as extraordinary films and novels created in the years since 1918, offer a beautiful and harrowing picture of the experience. In this two-day seminar we will explore some of the extraordinary poetry as well as novels, films, and documentaries in an effort to understand what happened a hundred years ago and how the war shaped the world we still live in today. | |||
