The History of Modern Cuba: A Cuban Perspective | ||
| What constitutes Modern Cuba in the wake of its many internal and external struggles? From the rapacious conquest of the 16th century through the perennial struggles of the Peninsulares and Criolles to the 19th century revolutionary and independence movements interrupted by an expanding United States, Cuba entered the 20th century simmering with frustration and discontent until 1959 when a revolution of complete separation from the United States threw her into the arms of the Soviet Union and a global "Cold War" through the late 1980's after which Cuba has experienced a fragile and tenuous existence into the 21st century. | |||
