SEMINAR PROFILE

H09 -
The Living Bill of Rights

Since the founding of the United States, it has been a long and constant struggle, fought mostly in the courts, to make the Bill of Rights more than a piece of paper--more than an a last minute addition to the Constitution intended to assure its ratification in 1789. Through examination of Supreme Court cases and legislative acts, this seminar will examine how the Bill of Rights is constantly being re-interpreted and applied to new areas of controversy. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from plaintiffs themselves about landmark rulings resulting from their actions. In particular, we will look at the crucial role the Bill of Rights played and continues to play in important issues in public education. Among the materials that will be used in this workshop is a text for schools, Rights Matter: The Story of the Bill of Rights.
