SEMINAR PROFILE

H18 -
|
Some Contemporary Poets | ||
| In this seminar we will read closely a handful of poems from Ireland, England, Canada and the United States, and to explore some of the most powerful voicings of our day. The first class will be devoted to the work of Michael Longley (Ireland) and Michael Hofmann (United Kingdom), the second to Anne Carson (Canada) and Louise Glck (United States). We will study a range of poems by each writer, to get a sense of the maturation of style, and continuity (or discontinuity) of concerns. We will ask, as well, to what extent these poets write from an awareness of nationality, and to what extent they belong to an international republic of the imagination. | |||
