Lost Gospels | ||
| Early Christianity was a diverse phenomenon. Different communities of Christians read and valued different texts, many of which do not appear in the current, canonical New Testament. Many texts were lost because they were deemed unfit by authorities in the early Church. Recent discoveries have uncovered a great number of these lost gospels, and they are changing our understanding of early Christianity. In this seminar we will look at two such gospels: The Gospel of Thomas and The Gospel of Judas. We will pay particular attention to how these two gospels present alternative understandings of such traditional themes as: Jesus and his mission, sin and salvation, authority, apostles, and the early Church. | |||
