The World of Raga: Beauty, Meaning and Tradition in the Music of India | ||
| Indian music is mesmerizingly beautiful, with elaborate and seductive melodies, compelling rhythms, and some of the most exciting improvisation found anywhere in the world. Artists like Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan have become familiar names in America, but their artistry is still mysterious to most listeners. The seminar will introduce participants to the core principles of Hindustani music, demystifying the art and making it possible to listen actively, finding beauty and meaning in even the most challenging performances. We will learn about the music's structure, history and cultural context while enjoying both audio and video recordings of the Subcontinent's greatest performers. With live demonstrations and lots of participation, "The World of Raga" will open your ears to a whole new way of listening. | |||
