SEMINAR PROFILE

A05 -
Unraveling French Cinema

This seminar is an introduction to the complexities of French cinema and to the ways in which French filmmakers have focused as much on the question, What is cinema? as they have on the story line of their films. We will study the many ways in which French directors complicate their films in terms that Hollywood audiences are unprepared to appreciate. We will analyze several cinematic arenas, (poetry, dream, hypnosis and terror) in order to both read a film for plot and also to uncover a thesis on the meaning of cinema hidden in the films texture. We will screen and discuss excerpts from five major films.
