The Ancient Romans and the Wider World | ||
| Through the lens of the visual arts, this seminar examines the interchange between the ancient Romans and the diverse peoples with whom they came into contact on three continents - Europe, Asia, and Africa. We will consider a process, frequently called Romanization, by which individuals and communities throughout the provinces of the Roman Empire espoused elements of the dominant culture, often adapting imported conventions to long-established local traditions. Conversely, we will also investigate how exposure to the wider world impacted the arts of imperial Rome, from calculated attempts to emphasize Roman superiority over 'barbarians' to less overt assimilations of foreign styles and imagery reflective of changes in Roman society. The seminar will be held at the Museum of Fine Arts. | |||
