Moral Leadership and Biblical Narrative: Self, Other, Action

"If I am not for myself, who am I? When I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?" (Hillel, a first century Jerusalem sage) If we understand leadership as accepting responsibility to enable others to achieve purpose in the face of uncertainty, when is leadership behavior "moral"? Hillel's questions offer insight into this question by directing us to reflect on the interaction of self-understanding, our relationship with others, and action. During this seminar, we explore classical Biblical narratives that can offer students the opportunity to engage with moral dilemmas as to self, other, and action in the exercise of leadership. Our objective is not only to address specific moral questions, but also to offer the opportunity to learn a process of moral reflection that can be applied to other texts, and of ongoing use to teachers and students.
