Identity and its Discontents: Beyond Sameness and Difference | ||
| This year's election campaign has clearly revealed the highly conflicted state of our society's feelings about race, gender, sexuality and social class. In this seminar, we will discuss some academic theories of how we construct these identities, and we will apply The theories to an analysis of contemporary cultural events. Looking at how identity categories intersect, and at both conscious and unconscious political "uses" of identity, we will attempt to think beyond sameness and difference and try to comprehend how we are mutually implicated in each other's lives. | |||
