H27 -
From the Arabian Nights to the Garden of Forking Paths: The Short Story in World Literature

Taking The Arabian Nights and Jorge Luis Borges' Fictions as our principle texts, we will examine ancient, modern, and post-modern forms of the short story. We'll consider how stories both create a sense of realism and undermine it, and how the fictional worlds created by short stories (and particularly by cycles of interlocking stories) can be different from the worlds of novels or poetry. Additional readings may include Chekhov, Colette, Hemingway, and selections from literary theory.
