Making It in America: Movie Heroes in the 50's and 60's.

Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, James Dean in East of Eden, and Paul Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof have all become, since their appearances in these films, directed by Elia Kazan, popular icons of American manliness. At the heart of each character lie failure, fear, confusion, and malice. That these qualities found their way into the heroic code in mid-century America is remarkable. A close look at Kazan's portrayal of thwarted and accomplished longing in these films may reveal why Eisenhower's America and Kennedy's were drawn to images of success that included so much failure.
